NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN TOUR GUIDING
The tourism sector is one of the rapidly developing global service industries that is expected
to deliver high quality services to international and national tourists. The quality of services is
essential for the long-term sustainability of the sector and this calls for well- trained and
skilled manpower. The tourist guide is trained and professionally oriented to handle various
tasks at the operational level. Consequently, the curriculum is intended to produce graduates
with skills in:
(i) Site guiding
(ii) Safari guiding
(iii) Tourist driving
(iv) Nature Interpretation
(v) Birding
(vi) Itinerary planning, tour packaging and costing
(vii) Camping and Camp management
(viii) Patriotism and paramilitary
(ix) Bookings and reservations
(x) First aid and Safety management
(xi) Travel management
Duration of the Programme
The National Certificate in Tour Guiding is a full-time programme taught for a period of two (2)
academic years. Each academic year consists of two semesters with each semester running
for seventeen (17) weeks.
Admission Requirements
Candidates for admission will be required to possess a minimum of:
a) Five passes at Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), including Mathematics and
English, obtained at the same sitting.
b) Any other qualification considered by the Admission Committee of HTTC and in line with
the College Academic Policy 2024 and other national regulations and guidelines as used
by the TVET.
Curriculum implementation
The curriculum for National Certificate in Tour Guiding is based on the modular system and
each module contains sub modules that will help the learner understand how to perform core
tasks such as applied knowledge, practical involvement and professional attitude.
Prospects of NCTG trainees
Students successfully completing the National Certificate Programme shall be well equipped
for entry into the operational ranks of the tourism sector. They shall be able to work in the
following areas in operational positions:
Conservation Areas
Tour companies and travel agencies
Heritage sites
Museums and Monuments
Art and Craft shops
Wildlife Sanctuaries
Transport sector
Accommodation facilities
Food and beverage Services facilities
Airports and air fields/strips
Recreational facilities
Other service industry businesses due to a good service attitude
Programme-level Learning Outcomes
The graduate must be able to:
a) Competently guide tourists
b) Plan, package and cost tours
c) Market tourism products to tourists
d) Understand and appreciate the role of tourism in the socio-economic development of
nations
e) Work as Travel Assistants.
f) Understand current hotel services at the national and international level
g) Sensitive to the needs of the tourists
h) Operate within the tourism sector’s social, economic, and legal constraints
i) Work as part of a diverse team in the provision and delivery of tourism services.
Assessment criteria
a) Continuous assessment
A guide to the continuous assessment has been provided.
These shall consist of knowledge-based and practical questions which will be done either
individually or in groups as administered by the instructors and marked out of 30%. They
will be:
Classroom exercises and tests- 10 marks
Assignments and presentations- 10 marks
Practical work- 10 marks
Total 30 marks
b) End of semester examinations
There shall be final examinations with in the last two weeks of every semester set and
conducted by the examining body of HTTC, consisting of Orals, Practical or Theory
examinations depending on the nature of the module. The examinations will be scored
out of 100%. The theory examinations will be converted to 70%. The office of the
Academic Registrar shall be responsible for management and administration of
end of semester examinations.
